The Search Engine

Google, the world’s largest search engine, is the company that dictates if your website lives or dies. Virtually if you are not on the first page of google, forget it. Most small businesses do not know how to make the most of search engine marketing ( sem ) and search engine optimization ( seo ).

SEM, that which determines the ranking of your advertisement, is very complex and you need to know how it works. Most times, it is best to leave this to the professionals. Ranking on a google sponsored page, ie the ads you see on the right hand side of the page, are determined partly by amount you are willing to bid and pay per customer click ( ppc ) . This is also determined by the prominence of relevent keywords.

PPC, pay per click is a type of paid advertising search engines offer, is a system where you bid on keywords. The highest bid gets top ranking.

SEO, search engine optimization, is about how search engines work and what people search for. 85% to 95% of websites are found through a search engine. There are two types of search engines. The first is natural or organic and the second is pay per click ( ppc ) , this can become very expensive, but it is the way to improve your ranking and traffic quickly.

Links- Powerful Tools

One of the most powerful tools in the development of your website is link building . Inbound links are needed so your website will rank well in the search engines. Obtaining links on high ranking websites can sometimes help your ranking more than having a larger number of links, but usually the more the better.

There are different types of links, firstly being one way links. These are links that point one way, as the name suggests, and considered by many to be the best form in the eyes of the search engines, also referred to as incoming or inbound links.

The next is a reciprocal link or also known as link swaps, link exchange or link partners. This is an exchange of links between similar websites, in other words, you put your link on his website and he does the same for you. The best plan is to link to a site witha higher pr ranking than yours, but the site you are exchanging with will probably think the same.

Three way links are another form of obtaining links. This is when site #1 links to site #2, who links with site #3 and site  #3 links back to site #1. This method is often used by webmasters who have a number of their own sites.

Link results play a major role when it comes to search results, in fact some search engines may not even considered your site if you do not have any incoming links.
